How Bloom works, and quick answers for when something doesn't.

How Bloom works

Bloom teaches children to notice their feelings and settle themselves, a little every day. There are three parts, and they work as one loop: learn a skill, practise it until it's a habit, then reach for it when a big feeling arrives.

Learn · once a week Adventures

A short animated story with Fox, watched together on the whiteboard. Each one teaches one skill. A new one every Monday.

How Adventures work
Practise · every day Daily Practice

Two minutes with Fox, every school day: breathing, humming or movement that rehearses this week's skill. This is the part that builds the habit.

How Daily Practice works
Regulate · any time SOS

Calm little games a child can pick up on a tablet whenever they need to settle. No scores, no way to fail.

How SOS works
Check-in · each morning the class tells Fox how they feel. Anonymous: you see how many, never who. More
Day Planner · build today's timetable with the class and put it on the wall. More

Getting started

Two minutes to set up. No passwords, no pupil accounts, nothing to install.

How do I set up my class?
  1. Open the setup link your headteacher sent you. It looks like class.discoverbloom.co.uk/join/… and works for everyone at your school.
  2. Enter your name, your class name, a class badge (a short version of the class name, up to 4 letters or numbers, like P3) and your email. You can add how many children are in the class too.
  3. Tap Get our class code →. Your code appears on screen and is emailed to you.

Print the code page and stick it on the wall. It makes signing in again after a holiday a ten-second job.

How do I sign in on the whiteboard and tablets?

On each device, go to class.discoverbloom.co.uk/code and type your class code. Capitals, spaces and hyphens don't matter.

Use the same code on every device in your room. They all share one set of progress, so a tick on the tablet shows on the whiteboard too. Each device remembers the code, so you only type it once.

Which devices does Bloom work on?

Anything with a modern web browser: interactive whiteboards, iPads, Android tablets, Chromebooks and laptops. There's nothing to install. Bloom is designed for big screens and tablets held sideways.

Do the children need accounts or logins?

No. Children never sign in and never type anything about themselves. The class code is the only key, and it belongs to the class.

Is there a one-page guide I can share with staff?

Yes. The quick start guide at discoverbloom.co.uk/start has a section for headteachers and one for teachers. The teacher half prints on one side of A4.

What should we do in our first week?
  1. Monday: open the Today page (tap the Bloom logo) and watch Adventure 1 together.
  2. Every day after that: do the Daily Practice with Fox, then the class check-in. Today shows you each step in order.
  3. Any time: show the class the SOS games so they know they're there.

You don't need to wait for the rest of the school to start.

The Today page

Your home page. Tap the Bloom logo in the top corner to get back to it from anywhere.

What's on the Today page?

From the top:

  • Your class name and the class flower pot (for example 625 / 6,000).
  • The calendar: today's date, then "This week we're learning to…" with this week's skill.
  • Today's three steps, in order: 1 Adventure, 2 Daily Practice, 3 Check in.
  • This week and The term: two rows of dots that show how far you've come.
  • Check-ins: your own check-in, then the class mood (five Fox faces with counts and a small bar for every school day this term).
  • Our school's garden, if more than one class at your school uses Bloom.
How do the three steps work?

They unlock in order, and the step to do next has the dark button.

  1. Adventure. Watch it once, usually on Monday. For the rest of the week this step shows Watched ✓.
  2. Daily Practice. Opens after the Adventure. Tap 🦊 Play and Fox leads it. Finishing ticks the day.
  3. Check in. Opens after the practice. Tap 🦊 Check in, or Not today to skip it.

When all three are done, the calendar turns green and the day's flowers count up. It stays green until tomorrow.

Locked steps say what they're waiting for, like After the Adventure or After the practice.

What do the dots mean?

This week has a dot for each school day, Monday to Friday:

✓Done Today Still to come Not ticked (tap it to fix)

The term has a dot for each week's Adventure: ticked when it's done, ringed for this week, numbered for weeks still to come.

We did the practice but forgot to tick it

No problem. A day that wasn't ticked shows as a dashed dot, and an amber note appears above the steps. Tap either one, or go to Daily Practice and use "Missed a day? Tap it to tick it" at the bottom of the page.

You can tick any earlier day this week. Days that haven't happened yet can't be ticked.

We missed Monday (trip, inset day, assembly)

Just watch the Adventure on the first day you can. The Daily Practice follows on for the rest of the week. There's nothing to catch up on and nothing breaks.

I ticked by mistake. How do I undo it?

On Today, the done practice step has an Undo link, and the green "day done" view has Undo today's tick. On the practice's end screen it's undo today's reward. Undoing takes that day's practice flowers back out of the pot.

What does Today show at weekends and outside term?
  • Weekends: a summary of your week (Adventure, how many practice days, how many check-ins, flowers earned) and the name of next week's Adventure.
  • Before term starts: the date your Bloom term begins. You can look through the Adventures any time.
  • After the last week: a well-done message, and every Adventure stays open to revisit.

Weekend practice is lovely, but flowers are only for school days.

Today is showing the wrong week

The week comes from your school's term start date, which we set for each school. If it's off, tell us and we'll fix it for the whole school.

Adventures

Eight weekly stories with Fox and friends. Each one lands a single skill that the rest of the week practises.

How do I play this week's Adventure?
  1. Tap ▶ Watch on Today, or open Adventures and tap this week's row (it's highlighted).
  2. The story opens full screen. Tap Begin Adventure.
  3. Pages turn by themselves once Fox finishes speaking. Pause to talk about it whenever you like.

When you reach the end, the week is marked as watched by itself. You can just press play and teach.

Story controls and keyboard shortcuts
  • Auto play (the switch at the top) turns pages for you. Switch it off to move on yourself with ▸. Bloom remembers your choice on that device.
  • → Space or Enter next page, ← back a page.
  • Esc or the ✕ in the corner takes you back to Adventures.
Can we watch an Adventure again?

Yes, as often as you like, including past weeks. Tap Rewatch on Today or any row on the Adventures page. The flowers for an Adventure are only added the first time.

What do the rows on the Adventures page show?

Each row is one week: its number, the Adventure, and its big idea. On the right, a small calendar shows the Monday that week starts. It gets a big green tick once you've watched it.

Under each one, the sprout and five circles show that week's practice days:

✓Done TToday Missed Not yet
It says "Adventure coming soon"

That week's story isn't uploaded yet. Check back soon. The Daily Practice still runs that week, so Today lets you go straight to step 2.

One week shows a video instead of a story

Some weeks may show a video while the story version is finished. It ticks itself when the video is nearly over, and there's a Mark as watched button below it if you need it.

Can I print the term plan?

Yes. On the Adventures page, tap 🖨 Print the term plan. It lists every week's start date, Adventure, big idea and Daily Practice on one page.

Daily Practice

The most important part of Bloom. Two minutes a day, every day, is what turns a skill into something a child reaches for on their own.

How do I run today's practice?
  1. Tap 🦊 Play on Today, or open Daily Practice and tap ▶ Start this week's practice.
  2. Fox reads each line aloud and the class follows along.
  3. At the end, the day is ticked and +100 flowers go into the pot.

Lines move on by themselves (auto play), or press → or Space. ← goes back and Esc leaves.

After break or lunch is a good time for it. It's a lovely way to settle back in.

We did the practice from the printed cards

Tick it on Today with "Did it from the cards? Tick it" under the Play button. It counts exactly the same.

Can we practise more than once a day, or pick a different one?

Yes. The All practices list on the Daily Practice page has every practice so far, so you can pick an old favourite any day. Finishing any practice ticks today if it isn't ticked yet.

The pot gets one practice reward per school day. Practising again is always worth it, it just doesn't add more flowers.

A practice says "Coming soon"

Fox is still learning that one. If it's this week's, pick any other practice from the list in the meantime, or use "Did a practice anyway? Tick it" on Today.

Do we have to watch the Adventure first?

It works best that way, as the story sets the practice up, so Today unlocks the practice after the Adventure. If you open Daily Practice first, a small note offers to play the Adventure.

Class check-in

Each child tells Fox how they're feeling with one tap. About five minutes for a full class, and completely anonymous.

How does a check-in work?
  1. Start it from step 3 on Today, or open Check-in and tap 🦊 Check in now (that one works any time).
  2. Check the Pupils present number and choose how to do it (below).
  3. Each child taps the Fox face that matches how they feel, then a feeling word if they want one. Fox replies kindly.
  4. When everyone has had a turn, tap the grey Finish check-ins button in the bottom corner. That button is for you, not the children.
😄Great🙂Good😐Okay😟Not great😢Really upset

You'll then see today's class picture: a meadow with one Fox for each child, grouped by feeling. Children love this bit. The daily check-in adds +25 flowers.

Whiteboard or pass the tablet?
  • On the whiteboard: the class sees the Foxes on the big screen. Each child tells you how they feel and you tap a Fox for them.
  • Pass the tablet: each child takes the tablet, taps their own Fox, presses Done, and passes it on. The next child presses Begin.

Set your usual way in ⚙ Settings on the start screen. You can still pick the other one on the day.

Check-in settings (words, sound, class size)

Tap ⚙ Settings on the check-in start screen. These stay for your class every day:

  • Usual way: pass the tablet or whiteboard.
  • Feeling words: all 12 per face, a short list of 6 (good for P1), or faces only.
  • Read words aloud: on or off.
  • Class size: fills in Pupils present for you each time.
Some children are off today

Use the − and + next to Pupils present before you start. If you need to change it afterwards, tap the ✎ next to the count on the class picture.

Can I ask the class a different question?

Yes. Tap Ask something else on the check-in start screen (or on Today). Pick one of Fox's questions, like how playtime went, or type your own (up to 90 characters) and tap Save and ask. Your own questions are saved for your class; tap ✕ on one to remove it.

Fox reads out its own questions. For yours, you read it out and Fox stays quiet. Extra questions don't add flowers; only the daily check-in does.

We got interrupted halfway through

Nothing is lost. Tap Carry on on Today or on the Check-in page to pick up where you left off. If a check-in is still open when you start another, a bar lets you Carry on, Finish it or Skip it.

Closing a check-in before choosing whiteboard or tablet records nothing at all.

Where do I see how the class has been feeling?

Open Check-in in the top bar (or See class wellbeing after a check-in). You'll find:

  • The heartbeat: one bar for each school day, coloured by how the class felt. Gaps are days with no check-in. Tap a bar to see that day's meadow.
  • Choose This week, 4 weeks or This term.
  • Other questions: a card for each extra question you've asked.
  • Words we chose: the feeling words the class picked. These appear once there are 20 or more check-ins in the range you're looking at, so no one child's answer stands out.
Can anyone see what a particular child chose?

No. Every tap just adds one to a count. Bloom records how many children chose each face and word, never who. Nothing is stored against a child's name, and there are no names to store.

If a child picks Really upset, Fox tells them they're safe and thanks them for being brave. Follow up the way you normally would.

Your own check-in

Two taps a day for you, the teacher. It helps the school look after staff wellbeing.

Why is Bloom asking how I am?

The first time you open Today on a school day, Bloom asks "How are you today?". Tap a face and, if you like, a word. Or tap Not now.

The small face button in the top bar shows whether you've checked in today: a dot means not yet, green means done. Tap it to answer later or to change your answer. Your week shows as a row of Monday to Friday pills at the top of the Check-ins card on Today.

Who sees my answer?

Nobody sees your answer. Your own week is only shown to you, on your class's Today page. The school only ever gets counts across all staff, never names.

It never appears in pupil mode and never gets in the way of the class check-in.

SOS & pupil mode

Calm games for the moment a child needs one. Hand a tablet over and it shows nothing but SOS.

What are the SOS games?

Gentle games that help a child settle their body: breathing, humming and movement. There are no scores and no way to fail. They're grouped in shelves by what they help with, and new games appear as they're ready (the "A new game is growing" tiles show where).

The 🌼 number on each tile is how many flowers your class has collected from that game.

How do I hand a tablet to a child?
  1. Open SOS on the tablet.
  2. Tap 🖐 Hand to pupils in the top bar.

The tablet is now in pupil mode: only SOS and its games can be opened. Everything else is hidden, and nothing about your class's progress can be changed.

How do I get out of pupil mode?

Press and hold the Teacher button in the top bar for 3 seconds (it says keep holding… while you do). A quick tap does nothing, so children won't leave it by accident.

The microphone isn't working (iPad)

Breathing and humming games listen through the microphone, so the browser asks permission. Tap Allow.

On iPads, Safari can ask again from time to time. That's normal. To stop it asking: in Safari, tap the aA (or page settings) button by the address, choose Website Settings, and set Microphone to Allow.

If you tapped Don't Allow by mistake, change it the same way, then reload the game.

Day Planner

A picture timetable you build with the class each morning, then leave on the wall so everyone can see what's next.

How do I build today's plan?
  • Add: drag an activity from the list into the row, or tap it to add it at the end.
  • Reorder: drag a card along the row.
  • Remove: drag a card out of the row.

Bloom time is always in the plan and can't be removed. It ticks itself when you do today's practice.

Activities are colour-coded: routine, Bloom & calm, learning, creative & active, and people & wellbeing.

Using the plan through the day

Tap a card when it's done. The next card becomes NOW. Tapped one by mistake? Tap it again.

Tap 🖥 Show on the wall to fill the screen with the plan. Tap Back to planning to edit again.

Is the plan saved?

Yes, for your class, for today. It shows on every device signed in with your code. If the internet drops, the plan is kept on that device and syncs when you're back online.

Flowers & the class pot

Everything the class does grows flowers, all into one shared pot. Always as a class, never per child.

How does the class earn flowers?
+500watching a week's Adventure (the first time) +100the Daily Practice (once per school day) +25the daily class check-in +1each thing collected in an SOS game

Undoing a practice tick takes its 100 back. Rewatching or practising again adds nothing extra.

What happens when the pot is full?

The whole class gets a celebration the next time Today opens. After that the pot keeps counting, and there's a replay 🎉 button if the class wants to see it again.

What is "Our school's garden"?

If more than one class at your school uses Bloom, Today shows every class's pot growing together, plus the school's total. Classes are listed in name order, never ranked. Your class is marked us 🌱.

Your class & devices

The pill in the top right corner shows your school and class badge. Tap it for the class menu.

What's in the class menu?

Tap your school name and class badge in the top right corner:

  • Class, school and teacher name: a quick check that this device is in the right class.
  • Help & guides: this page.
  • Report a problem: the support board.
  • Refresh class details: picks up a name change straight away (otherwise it updates within the hour).
  • Log out of this class, with a check first so a stray tap can't do it.

In pupil mode the menu is hidden and only the school name shows.

We've lost our class code
  1. Go to class.discoverbloom.co.uk/code and tap Forgotten your code?
  2. Type the email you registered with and tap Email me our code. It arrives in a minute or two (check spam too).

Still stuck? Look for your code email from when you registered, ask the school office, or email hello@discoverbloom.co.uk. Your class's progress is safe either way.

A device is asking for the code again after the holidays

That's normal after a long break or a browser clear-out. Just type the code again. Progress is saved for the class, not the device, so nothing is lost.

Switch this device to a different class

Each device remembers one class. To change it (a shared tablet, or the wrong code was typed), tap the class menu in the top right and choose Log out of this class, or tap here to switch class. Then type the other class's code.

Nothing is deleted. Each class's progress stays safe on its own code.

I teach more than one class, or I job-share

Register each class separately with the school's setup link. You can use the same email for all of them, and a code reminder will list every class on that email. Job-share partners just use the same class code.

Our class name or badge is wrong

Send us a private message with the right details and we'll change it. Your devices pick it up within the hour, or straight away with Refresh class details in the class menu.

It says "Bloom is paused for your school"

Your school's Bloom access is switched off for now. Your flowers and progress are safe. Ask the school office about getting started again.

Something's not working

Most problems are fixed by a refresh. Nothing you've done is lost when you reload.

A page says "Couldn't load" or "Couldn't reach Bloom"

Check the internet connection, then refresh the page. If the connection drops mid-lesson, Bloom keeps going with what it already has and sends your ticks when it's back online.

The Adventure or a game won't load

School internet filters sometimes block parts of Bloom. Ask your IT contact to allow:

  • class.discoverbloom.co.uk and data.discoverbloom.co.uk (stories, games and pictures)
  • player.vimeo.com (any week shown as a video)
There's no sound

Check the volume on the device and the whiteboard speakers first. Fox's voice starts after a tap on the screen, so if a story or practice opened silently, tap ▸ or go back a page and forward again. For check-in words, make sure Read words aloud is on in check-in ⚙ Settings.

Something looks out of date

Refresh the page. On a computer, Ctrl + F5 (or Cmd + Shift + R on a Mac) makes sure you get the newest version.

"That code isn't working"

Check the spelling against your code email. Capitals, spaces and hyphens don't matter. If it still won't work, use Forgotten your code? to have it emailed to you again.

Privacy

As little as possible, and nothing about children.

What does Bloom store?
  • About your school: its name and one adult contact.
  • About your class: your name, the class name and badge, the class code and your email (used to send your code and reminders, nothing else).
  • About the children: nothing. No names, no accounts, no photos. Check-ins are counts, never who.

No advertising and no marketing emails. Read the full version on how Bloom handles data.

Can our data be corrected or removed?

Yes. Email hello@discoverbloom.co.uk and a person will reply. If your school stops using Bloom, we remove its records on request.

Contact & ideas

We read everything, and we reply the same school day where we can.

Something's broken, or I've got an idea

Tell us on the support board (also Report a problem in the class menu):

  1. Tap + Report a problem or suggest something.
  2. Choose 🐞 Bug or 💡 Idea, give it a title and tell us more.
  3. Tap Send. It shows as Waiting for review until we've read it.

Vote ▲ or ▼ on what other classes have raised. Pills show when something is Planned, In progress or Fixed, and our replies appear under each one.

Please don't include pupil names or anything that identifies a child.

Send us a private message

Open the support board form and tick "Just message us privately, don't post this on the board". Add your email if you'd like a reply. It comes straight to us and never appears on the board.

Or email hello@discoverbloom.co.uk.

No answers match that. Try fewer or different words, or ask us directly.
Still stuck?

Tell us what's happening and we'll sort it out.
